The FOCAC summit held in Beijing on September 6, 2024, was indeed a pivotal moment for the China-Egypt economic relationship. During this summit, Egypt's Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli engaged in productive discussions with industry leaders, including notable figures such as Wei Jianjun, chairman of Great Wall Motor (GWM), and Mr. Moustafa Aldashan, chairman of Amoun Ra company.

The meetings underscored the growing collaboration between China and Egypt, particularly in the automotive sector. GWM, known for its significant presence in the automotive industry, expressed strong confidence in Egypt as a strategic location for expansion. This aligns with broader trends of increased Chinese investment in various sectors across Africa, with Egypt positioned as a key partner in this dynamic.

The discussions at the summit likely included GWM’s plans for expanding their operations, enhancing production capabilities, and exploring new market opportunities within Egypt. The positive outlook from such high-level meetings reflects a mutual commitment to strengthening economic ties and leveraging each country’s strengths for mutual benefit.

Prime Minister Madbouli praised GWM's contributions to Egypt’s automotive sector and encouraged the company to bring more advanced technologies, particularly in new energy and intelligent vehicles. This aligns with Egypt's national strategy for localizing the automotive industry, with a special focus on electric vehicles (EVs). Egypt is keen to strengthen its partnership with China in this sector to accelerate its transition to new energy.

Wei Jianjun expressed GWM's commitment to supporting Egypt's vision by tailoring products and services to local market demands. The Egyptian government’s efforts to advance the new energy transition have created a favorable environment for automotive investment. The Prime Minister was impressed with GWM's new energy vehicles, including the Wei brand's Blue Mountain and Alpine Executive models, predicting strong market potential for these vehicles in Egypt.

GWM has been active in Egypt since 2008, with its models like the Haval H6 and Haval Jolion ranking among the top 10 in various market segments. The company currently operates 25 stores in Egypt and plans to further expand, supporting Egypt's push for the localization of automotive production. GWM is transitioning from vehicle exports to technology exports, which is expected to drive local employment and support Egypt's goal of developing its own automotive industry. The upcoming launch of the new energy Haval H6 in October 2024 will further contribute to this effort, offering Egyptian consumers greener travel options.

Looking ahead, GWM sees Egypt as a strategic base for expanding its presence in Africa, offering comprehensive solutions across vehicle categories, power types, and user needs. By promoting China’s intelligent manufacturing and contributing to sustainable global development, GWM aims to solidify its role in the evolving automotive landscape of Egypt and beyond.
